"Noteworthy, Notorious, Neglected"
Biblioklept summarizes the year
To which summary I would add the unjust neglect in larger media coverage of Maaza Mengiste, Petina Gappah, and Yiyun Li--all of who (for the works of this year at least) deserve a much wider audience. If you are in need of a fiction fix, you couldn't do much better than one of these three. Both Mengiste and Li for their profound humanity and compassion and Gappah for her savage wit, insight, and also for profound compassion in another vein. It would seem that to create truly great and powerful literature, profound compassion might be a mainstay.
